5 Steps To Successfully Install A Pergola

5 Steps To Successfully Install A Pergola

Pergolas are a great way to add functional outdoor space for your home or business. Pergola installation, however, is no easy task and should be left up to professionals who know what they’re doing. If you still feel like you want to build your own pergola, props to you! We want to help you every step of the way. First, you need to know your types of pergolas.

There are many different pergolas to choose from, including cedar, wood, metal, and vinyl. The material you select will determine the cost of your pergola construction as well as its lifespan. Cedar or other premium materials last longer, but they are also more expensive.

If you know that you won’t want your pergola for more than a couple of years, then you may want to consider cheaper materials that require less maintenance and can easily be replaced when necessary.

That we’re clear on materials, let’s get started with step one.

Step One: Install The Base

The base is the foundation of your pergola, and you need to make sure it’s stable before moving on to the rest of the process. If your pergola is freestanding, like most are, then set up paver stones around your area before continuing with the next step. This will create a sturdy base to build around, so your pergola doesn’t collapse. You can skip this step if you have a deck, as these are already strong foundations for pergolas.

Step Two: Install The Posts

Once you have a solid foundation, it’s time to start adding the posts. You can use treated lumber or cedar, whatever you like best. Use metal post brackets to secure the posts and connect them with cables. Keep adding posts until your pergola is as wide as you’d like it to be; usually, 2-3 feet apart is optimal spacing.

Step Three: Install The Beam

Once all of your posts are secured, it’s time to add the beam. Use cables to secure the beam across the top and use wood screws to attach it. Be sure that you’re using a strong material like treated lumber for the beam to prevent any possibility of collapse. This is one of the most important steps in pergola installation, so make sure to take your time.

Step Four: Build The Railing System

Use cedar pickets or treated lumber for the railing system of your pergola. Be sure they are fastened together strongly with metal brackets and screws. Connect them to the posts with cable ties and secure them in place with wood screws. This is a great time to add some plants or flowers to soften up the look of your pergola and make it more attractive.

Step Five: Install The Roof

Install roofing felt before adding additional shingles if you’re adding a roof to your pergola. Use galvanized nails or screws to attach the shingles and leave a slight overhang all the way around to protect your pergola from rain. If you aren’t adding a roof, make sure to add lattice panels along the top of your railing for more aesthetic appeal.

The Finished Product

Your pergola is done! Now it’s time to enjoy it. Sit down, relax with a drink, and admire your work. Pergolas are perfect for lounging underneath on hot days or just enjoying the shade that they provide. If you’re looking to add more functional space to your yard, pergolas are the way to go.
